International Education Curriculum Development

USIEA’s mission includes building an International Education Curriculum for Chinese universities to help encourage student mobility. We hope that by providing a standard curriculum for universities, students will be better prepared to study abroad.

The curriculum, which was launched in 2013, is titled “International Education and Intercultural Communication (the ‘Curriculum’)”. When developing the Curriculum, we planned to create a deep resource for Chinese schools, which incorporates knowledge from expert lecturers working on the front lines of international education both in China and abroad. This resource is available to all of our Chinese member universities free of charge, and covers a wide range of topics related to study abroad.  The Curriculum has been used as a resource by university administrators to encourage students to go abroad, and to develop both pre-departure orientations and re-entry interviews.  Our ultimate goal is to provide students with a basic understanding of studying abroad, prepare them for their study abroad experience, and to help them develop essential skills while studying and living abroad.

We appreciate the fact that international education and study abroad varies widely based on the type of program. There are non-credit programs, full degree programs, and programs ranging in length from one week to several years. It is not possible to provide information on every type of program, each of which has its own unique advantages and challenges.

USIEA focuses on study abroad opportunities which take into account our main audience.  The Curriculum focuses on undergraduate university students planning to study overseas after completing four years of study in China. The Curriculum highlights the educational systems in major overseas study destinations, available majors, institutional profiles, country highlights, classroom culture, a variety of pedagogical approaches, culture shock, and cross cultural communication. Teaching aids such as PowerPoint presentations, a suggested reading list and real-life student case studies are included.

After the release of the first edition in August 2013, three of USIEA's Chinese partner universities adopted the Curriculum in Fall 2013. The Curriculum was offered as an elective in each university’s course directory, and has since become popular with students; for instance, over 200 students chose to follow the Curriculum in Zhejiang Gongshang University in Fall 2013.

We are currently collecting feedback on the Curriculum from lecturers and students. This feedback will be incorporated into the Curriculum’s second edition, together with information on new developments in international education.

It was an amazing experience studying and living in sunny California. UCR is like a garden where the flowers of knowledge, freedom, respect, and happiness are in full blossom. Grab a cup of coffee, sit in the lovely sunshine, open my favorite book, and start my brand new day.

While studying at Columbia University, I was taken to the real science. This is not the "textbook science", but science at the frontier. With the inspiration from the professor, I started trying to solve the critical problem independently and the process has been full of excitement. No doubt the spirit of independence and the capacity of foresight would be indispensable for my future life. Columbia University is definitely an amazing place to improve you at the fundamental level.

You live the same way as others and feel comfortable in home country.Only those who have studied in a foreign country understand the opportunities and the challenges you have to confront. Never give up and you will obtain not only knowledge but also the courage to face uncertain future.

I had a really wonderful time at CELOP and made a lot of friends that I still keep in touch with today. My instructors were great and taught me a lot both inside and outside classroom. I also had a conversation partner who was very helpful in improving my English. My experience at CELOP really helped me learn more about American culture and schools which has allowed me to succeed in my current position. I wish I could go back and study there again and again. You will never forget your experience here.

If you ask me what the most awesome activity is while I study at Metropolitan College Boston University in regards to academics, my answer is definitely networking events and professional conferences. Boston is home to many institutions of higher education like MIT, Harvard, and Boston College. Every year an increasing number of elite specialists in different industries from all over the world come to Boston for specific events. I joined Aite group for internship, and worked as a full-time employee. Even though the project I was assigned was a little bit tough for me, I learned a lot from my teammates. Thanks to this certificate program, I entered a small international arena to learn from different people from different countries.
